These Healthy Sloppy Joes have all the yumminess of the original but without all the fat and with less calories!
Please tell me I’m not the only one who can’t hear the words “Sloppy Joe” without hearing Adam Sandler singing and seeing Chris Farley dancing around in a hair net.
Can you believe this is the first time that I’ve made Sloppy Joes for my family? I think probably because I just don’t typically buy ground beef, and also because my kids kind of flip out everytime they spill. Which is ironic, because they have no problem leaving their toys literally every place there is, but a drop of milk on the table? The world has come to an end.
So, first, I made these Healthy Sloppy Joes. I switched out the ground beef for some Jennie-O ground turkey and I switched out the 1/4 cup of brown sugar and replaced it with 2 TBSPs of Truvia brown sugar baking blend. So I cut the fat and the calories by a ton but didn’t sacrifice any of the flavor. It still had that classic Sloppy Joe flavor and was delicious!
And then because of my hypocritical dinner time neat freaks, I made them into Sloppy Joe Noodle Bowls! I scooped some up over some whole wheat noodles, and handed them some forks! Problem solved.
Either way, it makes for such an easy, delicious, and nutritious weeknight dinner!
Healthy Sloppy Joes
- 1.25 pounds ground turkey
- 2 TBSPs brown sugar stevia mix I used Truvia Brown Sugar Baking Blend
- 1 TBSP grill seasoning
- 1 medium onion chopped
- 1 red bell pepper diced
- 1 TBSP red wine vinegar
- 1 TBSP Worcestershire sauce
- 2 cups crushed tomatoes
- 2 TBSPs tomato paste
- low calorie rolls or whole grain pasta for serving
- Spray a pot with cooking spray and place over medium heat. Mix together the brown sugar baking blend and the grill seasoning and set aside.
- Brown the ground turkey and add the brown sugar/grill seasoning. Once the meat is cooked, add the onion, red peppers, vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce, cooking and stirring often until the vegetables are soft.
- Add in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste and stir until well combined. Reduce the heat to low, and continue cooking about five more minutes.
- Serve over whole wheat pasta or on low calorie buns.
