It’s Friday! Cheers!

Whew. I can’t believe this week is over. After last week, I thought it would be awhile before I was SO happy to see another Friday come. I was wrong. Gavin gave Quinn the stomach flu, and she wrapped up his Skylander Party by puking all over it. Happy Birthday, buddy. Then just a few days later, with green goop POURING out of her eyes, I brought her to the pediatrician, thinking she had pink eye. I was wrong. Double ear infection. The nurse was also kind enough to point out FOUR teeth just breaking through the surface. And not those sort of painful pointy ones, but molars. Big giant molars. Poor kid. No wonder she has been filling our days and nights with shrieks of horror.

This was Quinn on Monday after playing in the mud because I just didn’t have it in me to stop her. #bestmomever

It’s only 8:30. Is it too early for a glass of wine?

In addition to Quinn’s plight, Nathan has been coughing up a rainbow of phlegm and walking around like he is knocking on death’s door. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if he came home with a catalog of coffins. I love the man, but seriously, he is the biggest baby when he is sick.

Is it any wonder that we don’t have a Christmas tree yet?

Despite all of this, I am mustering up every ounce of Christmas spirit I have. I love this time of year. Since my mom’s death a few days before Christmas five years ago, I have struggled with Christmas, one of her most favorite times of year, but I have really put forth an effort to enjoy it, and not let myself soak in my own grief. My kids have certainly made that easier.

But do you want to know what else has? Cookies.

That’s right cookies, and good friends. For many years, I have gotten together with friends on one Saturday each December and baked and baked and baked and baked and drank wine and baked and drank some more wine and laughed and talked and had a great time and drank some more wine.

It’s one of my favorite holiday traditions, and it’s TOMORROW!! You know that scene in Elf when Buddy the Elf starts screaming “SANTA’S COMING!!” So when I say tomorrow is cookie making day, just imagine me in yellow tights and a green hat screaming “TOMORROW IS COOKIE MAKING DAY!” Thats kind of how I feel about it.

Want to know what I’m going to make?? I’ve been stalking some of my favorite baking bloggers over the last month, and I think I have a pretty solid list.

Starting at the top and working our way down  . . .

We have insane Gingerbread Oreo Truffle Bark from Inside Brucrew, I’m-going-to-eat-the-whole-pan Buttercream Fudge from The Domestic Rebel, the most delicious Biscoff Pretzel Toffee Bark from Crazy for Crust (which I realize that I just made for Gavin’s Skylander Party, but honestly it is that good), this delicious peanut butter creation of Cookies ‘N Cream Peanut Butter Bark from Sally’s Baking Addiction (if you haven’t made your Christmas baking list, you are going to want to head over to Sally’s blog immediately, she has soooo many delicious treats), and this chocolatey goodness of Peppermint Oreo Fudge from Something Swanky.

And finally, because it wouldn’t be Christmas without it, I’m going to be making some of my Mint Oreo Bark.

Do you notice a theme?

Yup. This year there will be no rolling or dipping of any kind. Because when you have spent two weeks cleaning up snot, vomit, and tears (and planning a five year olds birthday party that didn’t include rainbows), you need sugar that you can just break apart and move forward . . . to your next glass of wine.

What are you baking this year??

  1. Sandra Kohlmann says

I’m baking everything this year. I’ve made four new kinds of cookies in the last week, to enter into a contest. Each year, we bake 25-30 different kinds of cookies, which we’ve been making for decades, so even if I come up with no new cookies from here on out, I’ll be hitting the 30 recipe mark, come Christmas. Plus we bake a variety of quick breads, candies, and other treats. I might need someone to do an intervention to get me to stop baking!

Oh, I hope you love the Biscoff bark! I need to organize a day like that with my ladies. Although I think I’d prefer the drinking. :)

Oh, and I hope all the nasty goes away soon. :(
