Chicken Lettuce Wraps

These Chicken Lettuce Wraps are done in under 30 minutes and they are better than your favorite Asian restaurant!

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil see note 1
  • 1 small yellow onion diced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 pound ground chicken see note 2
  • 1/2 cup hoisin sauce
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar see note 3
  • 1/2 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 1 - 2 teaspoons chili paste
  • 8 ounces water chestnuts drained and diced
  • 4 green onions diced 3 inches into the green
  • 12 leaves Bibb Lettuce or Boston Lettuce
  • sesame seeds for serving, optional

Instructions

  • Place a large skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil to heat through. Add in the garlic and diced yellow onion and cook until the onion is translucent, about 5 to 7 minutes.

  • Add the ground chicken, cooking and breaking it up.

  • While the chicken is cooking whisk together the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, ginger, and chili paste to make the sauce.
    1/2 cup hoisin sauce, 3 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar, 1/2 tablespoon minced ginger, 1 - 2 teaspoons chili paste
  • Once the chicken is cooked, stir in the sauce, water chestnuts, and 1/2 of the diced green onions. Cook for 1 minute.
    8 ounces water chestnuts, 4 green onions
  • Serve in Bibb Lettuce and top with the remaning scallions and sesame seeds.

Notes

  1. If you happen to have sesame oil on hand, this is a great way to add another layer of flavor to this dish. Simply replace the olive oil with it.
  2. Ground turkey, ground beef, and ground pork all work as well. If you use ground beef or ground pork, you will want to drain off any excess grease before starting step 4.
  3. Rice wine vinegar lends a really unique and delicious taste to this recipe. That being said, apple cider vinegar will work in a pinch.
