Ingredients

  • 12 apples unpeeled, and cut into quarters, see note
  • 6 cups water
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar see note
  • 8 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon whole allspice
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves

Instructions

  • Combine all of the ingredients in your slow cooker.
12 apples, 6 cups water, 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 8 cinnamon sticks, 1 tablespoon whole allspice, 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • Cook on high for 4 to 6 hours or on low for 8 to 10 hours.
  • Strain through a mesh strainer, and press the apples as you strain them to get as much liquid out of them as possible.
  • Strain a second time using a mesh strainer and a cheesecloth (a disposable coffee filter is a great replacement for the cheesecloth).
  • Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  1. Apple Type: I like to use a mixture of sweet and tart apples, like Gala and Granny Smith. But you can truly use whatever apples you love most. If you use only tart apples, you may need to add more sugar. If you use only sweet apples, you may need to cut back on the sugar.
  2. Cutting Apples: There is no need to peel the apples. You do need to quarter them, cut out the seeds, and remove the stems.
  3. Sugar: This recipe is written to have the same level of sweetness you would get from cider at the orchard. My family loves their cider sweeter, so we typically bump the sugar up to 1 or 1 1/4 cups. I recommend making this recipe as written, tasting the recipe, and adding more sugar to the hot cider if desired.
  4. Serving size: This makes about eight 6-ounce servings.
