Ingredients

  • pizza dough homemade or store-bought pizza dough, see note 1
  • 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey (453.6 grams)
  • 3 tablespoons taco seasoning homemade or store-bought, see note 2
  • 3/4 cup salsa divided (213 grams)
  • 1 cup refried beans see note 3 (240 grams)
  • 1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese shredded (169.5 grams)
  • chopped tomatoes optional for topping
  • chopped iceberg lettuce optional for topping
  • sliced black olives optional for topping
  • sliced green onions optional for topping
  • corn chips optional for topping

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Roll out your pizza dough to be at least a 12 inch pizza size and place it on a baking sheet or pizza stone. (Of course, you can also use premade dough and roll it out into its square shape.)

  • In a large skillet, cook the ground beef, breaking it up. Once it is browned and cooked through, drain any excess grease and stir in the taco seasoning and 1/4 cup of the salsa. Cook for another minute and then remove from the heat.
1 pound ground beef, 3 tablespoons taco seasoning, 3/4 cup salsa
  • Spread the refried beans carefully over the pizza dough. If they are difficult to spread, you can put them in the microwave for 30 seconds and that will make it easier. (Please be smart and don't microwave them in the can they came in.)
    1 cup refried beans
  • Next, add the remaining 1/2 cup of salsa.
    3/4 cup salsa
  • Spread the beef mixture over the salsa and then finally top with the shredded cheese.
    1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese
  • Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the cheese is nice and melted and when you lift the edge of the pizza with a spatula, it feels stiff and looks crisp underneath.
  • After baking, top with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, sliced olives, green onions, and corn chips.

Notes

  1. Making pizza dough from scratch will lengthen the time of this recipe. But I like to make the dough the night before and then this keeps the recipe to 30 minutes. You can see my full pizza dough tutorial here: The Secret to Perfect Pizza Dough.
  2. My homemade taco seasoning comes together with ingredients already in your pantry. I have measurements for a big batch that we love to keep on hand. You will need 3 tablespoons of it for this recipe.
  3. My crockpot pinto beans are perfect for this recipe. They are easy to make and work really well in this recipe.
