Instant Pot Rice is my favorite way to make rice. It is an easy set-and-forget method that is perfect when you are making dinner.
Our family eats an intense amount of rice. It is one of our favorite ways to stretch a meal further. We love making rice to put on the side of our chicken tacos; our kids then build burritos and burrito bowls with the rice and chicken.
Making rice in the Instant Pot is such an easy way to make fluffy and perfect rice. We pop it in the pressure cooker and then we can focus on the rest of dinner! You will love this simple and delicious way to make rice.
How to Cook Rice in the Instant Pot
Here is a brief overview of how this Instant Pot rice recipe comes together. For the full recipe including all measurements and cooking times, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
- Rinse the rice. Whether you use brown rice, white rice, or jasmine rice, you will want to rinse it first. Read more on this below.
- Add everything to your Instant Pot. Add the rinsed rice, water, and salt to your Instant Pot.
- Cook the rice. Close the Instant Pot and make sure the pressure release valve is set to sealing. Set your Instant Pot to “Rice.” This will be a 12 minute cook time after it has come to pressure. After a few seconds, it will kick on. At the end of the cooking time, it will beep.
- Let the pressure release. Use a natural pressure release (rather than a quick pressure release) and allow the float valve to drop before opening the Instant Pot. This takes about six minutes. Then open your Instant Pot and enjoy your perfectly cooked rice.
Rinsing Rice
Rinsing rice before cooking is an important step that improves the texture, taste, and overall quality. It helps remove this excess starch, resulting in fluffier rice that doesn’t stick together. To rinse your rice, simply place it in a fine-mesh strainer or a bowl and run cold water over it until it runs out clear. Whether you are making your rice on the stove, in the microwave, or pressure cooking it, I recommend rinsing it first.
Water Ratio for Instant Pot Rice
When cooking rice on the stove, it is often recommended to use double the amount of water as rice. When making it in a pressure cooker, you need less water since none will be released during the cooking.
You want to use 1 1/4 cup of water for every cup of rice. This recipe can be doubled or even tripled keeping this ratio in mind and keeping the settings the same.
Storing and Reheating Leftovers
Store any leftover cooked rice in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Always use your best discretion with leftovers. Reheat the portion you plan to eat in the microwave or on the stovetop, adding a splash of water to help the rice break out. Leftover rice is perfect when making fried rice.
What to Serve With Rice
- Make a Teriyaki Chicken Bowl.
- Serve your Chicken Stir Fry over it.
- Serve it as a side with Crockpot Chicken Tacos.
- Use it to make Chicken Fried Rice.
