Self Rising Flour is so easy to make at home with all purpose flour. Just three ingredients that you keep on hand, and you are on your way.

There is nothing worse than getting everything out for a recipe and realizing that you don’t have an ingredient you need. If that is the case with self-rising flour, I have the perfect solution for you. A simple combination of all purpose flour, baking powder, and salt and you will be able to make the perfect substitute for self rising flour for your recipe.
Self-Rising Flour Ingredients
Just three ingredients are needed to make your own self-rising flour substitute for the store-bought version. Be sure to scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full list of ingredients and their measurements.
- All purpose flour
- Baking powder: The leavening agent that gives the baked goods their rise. Be sure you use fresh baking powder. You can test it by mixing a little bit with some water; it should bubble up right away. If it doesn’t, toss it and get new baking powder.
- Salt

How to Make Self-Rising Flour
This self-rising flour recipe is as simple as whisking together the ingredients in a large bowl. Be sure they are very well mixed so the baking powder is well dispersed throughout the flour. The homemade self rising flour is then ready to be stored or used in recipes. For the full list of ingredients and their measurements, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

How to Use Self-Rising
The number one way I use this recipe is in my easy beer bread recipe. It makes it an insanely quick recipe that you will absolutely love.
If you want to use this in a recipe that doesn’t specifically call for self-rising flour, look for a recipe that uses 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of baking powder per cup of flour. Then replace the all-purpose flour with this one for one and omit the baking powder and the salt from the recipe.
It is important to note that if the recipe also calls for baking soda that should be left in.

Tips and Tricks
- Storing homemade self-rising flour: Be sure to start with fresh ingredients to extend how long this flour will last. Store it in an airtight container in your pantry. If your baking powder is fresh, this can be stored for up to six months.
- Measuring flour: For detailed steps and photos for measuring flour without a scale, see this post: How to Measure Flour.
