Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs are incredibly easy to make, and come out perfect every single time. Once you hard boil eggs in your pressure cooker, you’ll never go back.

Whether you are making an egg salad sandwhich, deviled eggs, or just want a hard boiled egg for your salad, there is nothing worse than peeling a hard boiled egg that takes half the egg with it.

While making hard boiled eggs on the stovetop is very simple, and easy to do, I’m here to tell you that making hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot is my favorite. Not only is it a very simple hands off process, they peel perfectly every single time.

How to Hard Boil Eggs in Instant Pot

  1. Place the steamer basket in the instant pot: This likely came with your instant pot and it is needed for this recipe.
  2. Add 1 cup water.
  3. Add eggs: Gently place the eggs in a single layer on the steamer basket.
  4. Set the Instant Pot: Close the pressure cooker and make sure that the steam valve is set to sealed. Then set it to manual and “High” for five minutes.
  5. Use Natural Pressure Release: Once the Instant Pot has come to pressure and counted down the 5 minutes, you will let it release it’s pressure on it’s own. Once the float valve drops (after about 7 minutes), you can open the Instant Pot.
  6. Transfer to Ice Water: Using tongs, transfer the eggs to a bowl of ice water. Let them sit for 5 minutes.

Use Old Eggs for Hard Boiled Eggs

When you are making hard boiled eggs – whether in the Instant Pot or not – it is best to start with older eggs. The longer an egg sits, the more the membrane separates from the sides of the shell. Thus, an older egg that is hard boiled is easier to peel.

Making Hard Boiled Eggs for Deviled Eggs

The exception to the old egg rule is deviled eggs. If you plan on making deviled eggs, you want fresher eggs. As the egg ages, the strands that hold the yolk in the middle of the egg weaken. It is more likely to move to the sides, making it more likely that the white will tear when you are preparing the deviled eggs.

Transferring to Ice Bath

The reason we transfer the hard boiled eggs to an ice bath after cooking them is to prevent the green ring from forming around the yolk.

However, make sure to set a timer and remove them from the ice bath as soon as the 5 minutes is up. Longer than that can make them difficult to peel.

How Long to Keep Hard Boiled Eggs

Hard Boiled eggs will keep in the refrigerator for up to one week if they remain unpeeled.

Once you peel a hard boiled egg, you should eat it that day.

Why do my hard boiled eggs look beautiful, but after a few days the yolk turns grey/green? Very unappetizing.

    • Lisa Longley says

Are you leaving them in their shell until they are ready to eat? That is key with hard boiled eggs.

  2. Susan says

I cook mine for 5 minutes on high pressure and then release the pressure immediately. When I allow the pressure to release naturally for 5-7 minutes, which is the usual recommendation, the eggs are green around the yolks…..over cooked. Wonder why.

  3. Linda Bearce says

Is an electric pressure cooker the same as the instant pot?

    • Lisa Longley says

      Yes!

  4. Julie says

When I use this time frame, my eggs always have a gray/green ring around the yolk. Even 4 minutes has done it. I’m still trying to find just the right timeframe to get mine perfect every time. But I do love the instant pot for cooking them. I’m thinking for me the sweet spot is somewhere around 4 minutes

    • Lisa Longley says

Are you doing the ice bath after? That is the key step in preventing that ring.
