This delicious Egg Roll in a Bowl is the perfect low calorie dinner. You will love this filling recipe!

I love egg rolls so much! Their flavor is just perfection, and I am never able to resist them. But I don’t love the fried wonton wrapper. It’s not super nutritious and keeps egg rolls from being a go-to dinner.
This delicious egg roll in a bowl recipe is the perfect solution to that. It takes everything you love about egg rolls, but without the frying and without the wonton wrapper. I just know that you are going to love these as much as I do.

Egg Roll Bowl Ingredients
- Sesame Oil: This oil keeps the ground turkey from sticking to the pan, but it also provides a great flavor to the final dish. I just love cooking with sesame oil.
- Ground turkey or ground chicken: Provides a light protein base. You could also use ground beef or ground pork.
- Coleslaw mix: Adds the essential crunch and fresh flavor known and loved in traditional egg rolls. This is a bag of shredded cabbage and carrots found near the bagged lettuce at your grocery store.
- Low sodium soy sauce: Adds a savory, umami-rich depth to the dish without too much salt. If you need the recipe to be gluten-free, use a gluten-free soy sauce or coconut aminos.
- Rice wine vinegar: This rice vinegar offers a mild, slightly sweet acidity that brightens the overall flavor of the dish.
- Ginger: Brings a subtle spicy zing that elevates the overall flavor. I love buying this in a tube and keeping it in my refrigerator. It is a little more expensive but keeps me from wasting the rest of the root. Otherwise, ginger freezes really well and you can keep your root in there for when you need more.
- Garlic: Infuses the dish with a rich, savory flavor.
- Green onions: Add a mild, slightly sweet onion flavor along with a pop of color.
How to Make Egg Roll in a Bowl
Here is a brief overview of how this easy egg roll in a bowl recipe comes together. For the full recipe including all measurements, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
Cook the Ground Turkey
Heat the sesame oil in a large skillet and add the ground meat, breaking it up as it cooks.

Add the Coleslaw and Seasonings
Once it has begun to brown, add in the slaw mix, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and ginger.

Finish off With Green Onions
Stir in the green onions. I love to top my egg roll bowl with some Sriracha, and more green onions and sesame seeds are fantastic garnishes.

Tips and Tricks
- Top with Sriracha. I absolutely love the addition of Sriracha sauce at the end of this recipe. It gives it a little something extra and I highly recommend it.
- Don’t miss the sesame oil. I generally like to use ingredients that most people have on hand, but the flavor that the sesame oil brings to this recipe is really worth springing for a bottle.
- Add noodles. I love this dish because it is a great low carb dinner. But if you are looking to stretch it adding noodles or rice is a great idea. Ramen noodles (without the flavor packet) would be smart because they cook so fast.
- Swap in ground beef. If your family prefers the flavor of ground beef, you can absolutely use that here. You won’t need the sesame oil, so consider that you will be missing that one layer of flavor.
- Add some roasted peanuts. Chopped up peanuts sprinkled on top at the end would be a wonderful addition.
Storing and Reheating Leftovers
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. Reheat only the portion you plan to eat in the microwave or on the stovetop over low heat until heated through. Always use your best discretion when storing and reheating leftovers.
If you like to meal prep, this is a great dish to meal prep. With it lasting up to four days in your fridge, you can make a batch of this on Sunday evening and take it for lunch Monday through Friday. This is such a win for me.

Rice wine or red wine vinegar? Little confused…
You are looking for rice vinegar, which is often also sold as rice wine vinegar.

My family, especially my 18 yr. old grandson, loved it. I made this with ground beef, but the next time I may try ground poultry. I also didn’t have rice vinegar, I used white wine vinegar. It is so easy and quick to make.

This is a very good and easy recipe. My family loves it and have made it several times. I have made it with ground chicken and ground beef. Both ways are good. I prefer hamburger, though.

Delicious! Great recipe and so easy to make. I will probably use coleslaw mix for Chinese every time. I added some noodles to stretch. I am already planning variations with other proteins including nuts.
This is a perfect dish to take to a potluck or party.
