The Best Margarita Recipe

The BEST on the rocks margarita recipe, this cocktail is simple to make and so delicious.

Frozen Margarita Ingredients

This frozen margarita recipe comes together with just a few simple ingredients and a blender.

  • Sweet and sour mix: Make your own for a refreshing margarita mix without the extra sugars and additives of the store-bought stuff.
  • Tequila: see my recommendations below.
  • Triple sec: Any orange-flavored liqueur will work for this. Cointreau is what I recommend for a more elevated cocktail, but rail triple sec will work too.
  • Crushed ice

Homemade Sweet and Sour Mix

This homemade mix is easy to make and the key to making the best margaritas!

How to Make Frozen Margaritas

These frozen margaritas come together in your blender in minutes. For the full recipe including all measurements, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Make sweet and sour mix. Simmer water and sugar until it is fully dissolved. Pour it into a jar and let it come to room temperature. Add lemon juice and lime juice to the cooled sugar mixture. If you use store-bought sweet and sour mix, skip to step two.
  • Blend ingredients. Add tequila, sweet and sour mix, triple sec, and crushed ice to a blender and blend until smooth.
  • Serve. Serve in glasses rimmed with salt and garnished with a lime wedge.
TOP PICK

Best Blender

I love this blender set for so many recipes, but it is amazing for these margaritas. It crushes the ice in a flash.

Best Tequila For Margaritas

The most important thing to remember when you are buying tequila is to look for a bottle labeled “100% de agave.” Agave is what tequila is made from, so this ensures that your tequila is actually all tequila and not supplemented with a lower-quality alcohol.

Since we are using tequila in a mixed drink here and not drinking it straight, we don’t need to break the bank. Milagro Silver is my recommendation for a good mid-level tequila that is 100% agave and absolutely delicious. Sauza is a great budget-friendly option for this drink. If you are looking to splurge, I love Patron.

Why Crushed Ice?

Crushed ice will blend better and make your frozen margarita more smooth. If you don’t have crushed ice, simple place ice cubes in a large plastic bag and roll with a rolling pin or pulse the ice cubes in your blender a few times before adding the other margarita ingredients.

Make Ahead Margaritas

If you are serving a few margaritas at a time and don’t need the whole pitcher right away, or if you’re entertaining a crowd and want to make the frozen margaritas ahead of time, they are easy to make ahead and keep in the freezer. Pour the blended mixture into individual servings (mason jars work great). Be sure to leave at least an inch at the top to account for expansion when freezing. Cover them with a lid or tightly with plastic wrap. Place them in the freezer until you’re ready to serve. Let them thaw for a few minutes on the counter before serving.
