Grilled Pizza is a great way to make a pizza in the summer! It’s like a wood fire taste without the wood fire stove. You will love it.
Pizza is such a staple in our house. It’s always a win, and we love making our homemade pizza dough and then letting the kids make their own little pizzas. We especially love doing this in the summer with pizzas on the grill.
Grilling pizza is so simple, you will love this amazing and easy summer dinner.
Grilled Pizza Ingredients
Here are the simple ingredients that are needed for grilled pizza. Be sure to check out the recipe card at the bottom of the post for the full recipe, including all measurements.
- Pizza dough: I love to use my homemade pizza dough for this recipe, but any pizza dough will work.
- Pizza sauce: My Pizza Sauce recipe comes together with just a few ingredients in the blender and adds the perfect flavor to your homemade pizza. You could also use white pizza sauce or pesto.
- Pizza toppings: Cheese, pepperoni, cooked Italian sausage or ground beef, ham, olives, mushrooms, or diced green pepper. You will want to go easy on the toppings so that the pizza is easy to transfer to and from the grill. I love the simplicity of fresh mozzarella and a sprinkle of fresh basil.
The Secret To The Perfect Pizza Dough Recipe
How to Grill Pizza
Here is a brief overview of how this recipe for grilled pizza comes together. For the full recipe including all measurements, be sure to scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
Step 1: Grease the Grill Grates
Coat a piece of paper towel in oil and use tongs to oil the grates of the grill or brush the grill grates. This prevents the dough from sticking. Please note that grape seed oil and vegetable oil are best for the high heat of a grill.
Step 2: Roll out The Pizza Dough
Roll out the dough. Gently place the pizza dough on the grill and grill for two minutes with the cover closed.
Step 3: Add the Toppings
Remove the dough from the grill and flip it onto a cutting board. (Keep the grill closed so it doesn’t lose heat.) Coat it with pizza sauce, cheese, and any additional pizza toppings you wish.
Step 4: Cook the Pizza
Gently slide the pizza back on the grill and cover the grill again. Cook for an additional two to four minutes.
Tips and Tricks
- Roll out the pizza dough in advance. If you are making multiple pizzas on the grill, roll them all out prior to beginning cooking. Stack them with parchment paper in between them prior to grilling.
- Go easy on the sauce. For this recipe to work well you will want to go light on the toppings, but especially the sauce. This will prevent the pizza from sticking and make it easy to slide on and off the grill.
- Pay attention to the crust. Because the heat of a grill can vary greatly, especially when you are opening and closing it, it’s best to just pay attention to the crust. Rather than watching cooking times, you will want to aim for it be golden brown on both sides.
What to Serve with Grilled Pizza
Because this is such a quick recipe, I think making a few fresh sides before you start grilling is your best bet. Here are a few of my favorites for summer.
